How to Factory Reset an Android Phone

Factory reset is a restore of an electronic device to its original state, performed by erasing all the data in the device. Factory reset is also called ‘hard reset’ or ‘formatting’. You would want to factory reset your device either when you are selling your device, or because your phone or tablet is running too slow due to the lots of downloaded apps. Or it could be that some recent update on your device is causing some issues.

However, keep in mind that the factory reset will erase all the data on your device. So better create some backup of your contacts, pictures and videos, important documents. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Therefore, before resetting your phone, lets first back up the data through some simple steps:

Backing Up of Data:

You can easily backup data from your android device to your google account. And then restore it from your Google account, once you have factory reset your phone. To back up your data:

  • Click on the ’Settings’ icon.
  • Click on System.
  • Click on Backup.
  • Turn on the ‘Back up to Google Drive’ option. However, for this, you need to have your google account added.
  • To add your google account, go to ‘Settings’, then click on ‘Back up’.
  • Click on Account. Then click on ‘Add Account’.
  • You might be asked to enter your device’s password or pin.
  • Sign in to the account that you want to add by entering your email address and password.

Now let’s get resetting! You can reset your phone either through the ‘Settings Menu’ or by going into ‘Android Recovery Mode‘. For the example, I’ll be performing both these methods on Samsung Galaxy S7

Resetting Phone from ‘Settings Menu’:

  • Click on the Settings Icon on your home screen.
  • Go to the bottom of the Settings Menu.
  • Click on ‘Backup and Reset’.
  • You might be asked to enter your password or pin. Enter it.
  • Scroll down and click on ‘Factory Data Reset’.
  • Click on ‘Reset Phone’.
  • Click on ‘Erase Everything’.
  • After the device has finished erasing, select the option to ‘Restart’.
  • Your phone will reboot, and you will go through some initial startup processes like in case of a new phone. Now you can restore your data.

Resetting Phone from ‘Android Recovery Mode’:

If due to some issues you are unable to boot your phone and unable to go to the ‘Settings’ option of your device, then you will need to go into Android Recovery Mode. This is a little different for different devices. To see the exact procedure for your device, go to your manufacturer’s support site for instructions specifically for your device.

  • First power off your phone.
  • Now to go into this ‘Android Recovery Mode’, start your phone by simultaneously pressing the Volume button and the Power button. This will boot your phone in recovery mode.
  • Now scroll through the menu using the volume buttons, and select an option using the power button.
  • Go to ‘Wipe data/factory reset’ option using volume button.
  • Now select this option by clicking on the power button.
  • Go to the ‘Yes’ button and select it by pressing the power button. This will confirm the reset.
  • Once the reset is done, which will take some time, you will see the same recovery mode menu.
  • Go to ‘Reboot System Now’ option and select it using the power button.
  • Your phone has now been reset to its factory settings, it is like how it came from the market, containing no data of yours.
  • When you turn it on, you will go through some initial processes, like in case of a new phone. Then you can restore your data from where you had backed it up before starting restoring.
