AMOLED (Active matrix organic light emitting diode) is the technology that enables this display. It keeps a certain portion of the screen on even during sleep mode. Mostly it shows the date and time, battery status or certain notifications. Nokia Lumia used this technology for the first time in 2013, and it was then used on LG and Motorola phones.
