Flash Android 6.0 Marshmallow on Galaxy S4 via Unofficial CyanogenMod 13 ROM

With the release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow build, many devices also received the CyanogenMod ROM based on Android M. Also many developers have started porting CyanogenMod to their devices especially for those that will not receive the official latest Android OS firmware from the company. Galaxy S4 owners will be happy to know that they can now update Galaxy S4 to the unofficial ported CyanogenMod 13 custom ROM to enjoy Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As this is an unofficial version of a custom ROM which is not officially released thus you might face some not functioning feature or minor bugs but it has been tested by various users and they reported that a lot of functions are still working so those who want to test Marshmallow on their devices may go ahead and follow the given step-by-step guide.

There are not much changes in this ROM or extra features added, just the CM 13 source has been re-compiled. However it is expected that bugs will be fixed in the future releases soon and will be used as daily diver. So if you are interested then proceed to the installation guide. As this is a custom ROM, so you’ll be required to have a custom recovery like TWRP in order to install the ROM and Google Apps package on your Galaxy S4 (jflte) variants.

This guide containing the Android 6.0 CM13 custom ROM is compatible with Samsung Galaxy S4 phones. Do not try to install this firmware on any other device. Check the model number of your device first.

Before Getting Started:

  • Take a proper back up of your important data and settings on the phone using a custom recovery such as TWRP. In case anything goes wrong then you’ll be able to restore your data.
  • Download and install proper USB Drivers for the Galaxy S4 on PC.
  • Enable USB Debugging Mode on Galaxy S4 by navigating to Settings > Developer Options.
  • The latest version of a custom recovery like TWRP should be installed on it.
  • Make sure that the battery level of your Galaxy S4 is at least about 80% before proceeding to the installation guide.

Steps to Install CyanogenMod 13 Android 6.0 Marshmallow Custom ROM on Galaxy S4:

Step No 1:- Download the Android 6.0 Marshmallow CM13 ROM (cm-13.0-20151108-UNOFFICIAL-jflte.zip) and Google Apps package (Slim_mini_gapps.ALPHA.6.0.build.0.x-20151106.zip) from the above links on your PC (probably on the desktop).

Step No 2:- Now, connect the Galaxy S4 to the PC using its USB data cable.

Step No 3:- Move the CM13 Android M ROM zipped file to the internal storage of your phone.

Step No 4:- Now, disconnect the device from the PC and turn it OFF in order to boot into Recovery Mode.

Step No 5:- Turn ON the Galaxy S4 while pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons altogether for a while until the device enters into Recovery Mode.

Step No 6:- While your device is now in recovery mode, it is recommended to perform a nandroid backup and select all the partitions including System, Data, Boot, Recovery, EFS.

Step No 7:- Once the backup is completed, perform a full wipe.

Step No 8:- Go back to the main menu of TWRP recovery and tap the wipe button, select Advanced Wipe and after that select Dalvik CacheSystemData, and Cache. Confirm to wipe.

Step No 9:- Navigate to the TWRP main menu and tap on the install option. Select the CM13ROM that you have already transferred to the internal memory of your phone and select it.

Step No 10:- Proceed to the installation by swiping on the confirmation button.

Step No 11:- Repeat the above steps to install Google Apps package on Galaxy S4.

Step No 12:- After the successful installation of ROM and Google Apps, select “Reboot System” in the recovery.

Your Galaxy S4 might take about 4 to 5 minutes to boot for the first time after installation.

Done! You have successfully installed the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow with CyanogenMod 13 custom ROM on Galaxy S4.
